The ICL facility in Heerlen, The Netherlands, plays a central role in ICL Growing Solutions’ global production, packing, and distribution. Heerlen focuses on advanced solutions to enhance plant growth and productivity, whether in the agriculture, ornamental, or turf sectors.
The factory employs approximately 150 people and is a versatile production hub responsible for manufacturing ICL’s coated fertilizers, creating innovative nutrient blends, and packaging our products efficiently. It was here that ICL developed our eqo.x and eqo.s controlled release fertilizer coating technology, the first CRF coatings to be officially certified as meeting the EU’s upcoming biodegradability regulations. This breakthrough has been recognized internationally with both the Gold Globee Award and the Platinum Titan Business Award for sustainable innovation.
ICL Growing Solutions Heerlen houses four coating lines (75,000 mT/year capacity), a soft blending line (82,000 mT/year capacity), and a multi-purpose pilot plant for the development of new processes and products. Heerlen can pack controlled release fertilizer tablets and granules, water-soluble fertilizers, and other blends into small bags, boxes, buckets, and big bags as required by our customers.
The centralized distribution warehouses with a capacity of 11,000 pallets are key for the storage and global dispatch of products across Europe, Australia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East.
ICL Heerlen produces coated fertilizers as granules and tablets. Our four coating lines produce 75,000 mT/yr of Osmocote (e.g. Osmocote 5, Osmocote Exact, and Osmocote Pro), Agrocote, Agromaster, and Agroblen controlled release fertilizers.
The “Soft Blending” system at Heerlen is ideal for carefully blending our finished coated products and other granules, ensuring a consistent blend of fertilizers while maintaining product quality.
Our packaging machines pack the products produced on-site, and products from other sites, into small bags, boxes, buckets, or big bags ready for storage and distribution.
Our two on-site warehouses can store up to 11,000 pallets in narrow aisle racks and drive-in racks, keeping the finished product in perfect condition and ready for distribution throughout Europe, Australia, the Middle East, and the Far East.
The upper tier Seveso classified factory is certified for ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment), ISO 45001 (Health and Safety), and the RHP Quality Mark (for CRF in growing media). Up to 15,000 quality analyses are processed each month to validate raw materials and guarantee our products’ nutrient release patterns and longevity.
In addition to the important production, packaging, and distribution roles undertaken at Heerlen, the factory also functions as a hub for research, recently developing ICL’s innovative eqo.x and eqo.s fully biodegradable controlled release fertilizer technologies. The dedicated resources in regulatory affairs and R&D work to develop and improve our growing solutions for worldwide markets.
